How it works

Three steps from quote to covered

  1. Quote & review

Send us your census and current plan. We review what you have, where you're overpaying, and what your team actually needs.

  2. Design & compare

We build side-by-side options across carriers, including fully insured and level-funded, with clear costs for you and your employees.

  3. Enroll & support

We run open enrollment, integrate with payroll, and stay on as your year-round admin and claims advocate.

Built and run by Matthew Sohn

Mission Benefits is led by Matthew Sohn, a licensed California benefits advisor with 20+ years helping Bay Area employers, families, and individuals get coverage right. Author of Your Map To Health Insurance, Matthew brings the same plain-English approach to group benefits that he's known for one-on-one.

You get a broker who knows the carriers, an administrator who handles the paperwork, and an advocate who picks up the phone when a claim goes sideways, all from one Sunnyvale practice.

We were a 40-person team drowning in renewal paperwork and surprise claim denials. Mission Benefits took the whole thing over, found us a level-funded plan that lowered our fixed costs, and now our people just email one HelpDesk and it gets fixed.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Straight answers on group size, level-funding, multi-state administration, fees, and claims. Still unsure? Ask us directly.

What size employers do you work with?

We work with California employers from 2 to 200+ employees, plus individuals and families. Whether you're setting up a first group plan or refining benefits for a growing team, we right-size the approach to your headcount and budget.

What is a level-funded plan, and is it right for my company?

A level-funded plan combines predictable monthly payments with the upside of a self-funded structure: if your group's claims come in low, you may receive a year-end surplus refund. It often fits healthy small and mid-size groups looking to lower fixed costs. We model it against fully insured options so you can compare real numbers.

Can you administer benefits for employees in other states?

Yes. We're headquartered in California and administer benefits for employers with team members across state lines, coordinating multi-state compliance, carrier networks, and enrollment so you manage one relationship instead of many.

Do you charge employers a separate fee?

In most cases our broker compensation is built into the carrier plans you already pay for, so there's no separate fee for our brokerage and administration services. We confirm the exact arrangement in writing before you commit.

What happens when an employee has a claim problem?

Your team contacts our in-house claims advocacy desk and we handle it for you, working directly with the carrier on denials, billing errors, and coverage questions so HR isn't stuck on hold.
